Best Restaurants in Ubud Bali for Healthy Travelers 2018 – Paleo, Vegan, Gluten Free Options

Ubud is a foodie mecca and one of my favourite travel destinations for frequenting healthy restaurants. There is just soo much glorious, nutritious food! And by ‘healthy’ we mean restaurants that offer organic, locally and sustainably sourced, real food. Personally, we’re also looking for restaurants that have an awareness of, and cater to, allergies, intolerances (for us that’s gluten and dairy) and things like paleo, keto, plant-based or vegan.

With that in mind (and for those looking to avoid Bali Belly), here is a diverse selection of the best restaurants in Ubud Bali that cater to these categories for healthy travelers (that we have found so far, anyway!).[/vc_column_text]

Moksa, Ubud

.

Puskesmas Ubud II, Gg. Damai, Sayan, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan cooked, vegan raw, vegetarian, organic and locally sourced. One item on the menu that contains gluten, mostly plant-based menu.

Moksa was hands down our top pick for healthy eating in Ubud. Even my carnivorous husband was keen to head back to sample more of their plant-based menu. The standout feature of this gorgeous restaurant amongst the rice terraces was their creative menu that takes international favourites such as paella and gives them a healthy and mouth-watering Bali twist.

The highlights from the menu that we sampled were:
> BODY CLEANSER juice: Carrot, kale, celery, wheatgrass, ginger, apple, and lime juice. Anything with carrot, lime and ginger and I’m there. It’s the most refreshing combination, and incredibly good for digestion.
> SESAME TEMPEH entree: Who knew that coating tempeh with sesame made all the difference?!? Crisp sesame crusted tempeh, potato caprese, purple cabbage, and fennel slaw with tamari dipping sauce. This meal was sublime.
> BALINESE PAELLA main: My favourite meal from Moksa was the slow-cooked version paella with brown rice, carrot, sweet potatoes, green bean, sweet paprika, zucchini, tomatoes flavored with curry and kaffir leaf from our garden. So different and so mouthwateringly good.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention they offer a farmer’s market every Tuesday and Saturday so you can stock up on local produce if you’re in Ubud for a longer stay.

Zest, Ubud

Jalan Penestanan Kelod No.8, Penestanan, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan cooked, vegan raw, gluten free, organic and locally sourced. Mostly plant-based menu.

Our second-favorite healthy restaurant in Ubud was Zest, with the most beautiful online menu listing all meals with gorgeous pictures. We had planned our whole meal before we made it to the restaurant the first time we visited! The biggest draw cards for us were that the whole restaurant is gluten free, and offers really creative, plant-based meals.

Sometimes they were a little more creative than our taste buds were willing to accept, however being adventurous with your menu choices definitely paid off for us. Some of our highlights were:
CACAO CEREMONY drink: we shared this for dessert one night and I can’t remember a creamier hot chocolate that also wasn’t sickly sweet. You can choose your strength so we opted for the dark 80%.
> ZEST PANCAKES AND SMOOTHIE BOWL breakfast: Who doesn’t love GF pancakes, especially when stacked with mango, coconut, caramelized banana, rich cacao sauce and dragon fruit? The smoothie bowl (pictured) was just as sublime. More of a savory-ish dish with some spices mixes into the smoothie, I loved the different flavours of banana, moringa and katuk leaf smoothie topped with dragon fruit, papaya, granola, shaved coconut, Java almonds and mint leaves.
> SWEET POTATO TERRINE dinner: Served with smoky eggplant pate and beetroot sauce, then topped with sweet potato crisps, this completely plant-based deliciousness was my favourite meal off all from Zest. Highly recommend!

Pictured: breakfast spread of Zest pancakes and smoothie bowl (listed above), beetroot, cinnamon and lime shot and strawberry dream shake.

Sayuri Healing Food Cafe, Ubud

.

sayurihealingfood.com
JL Sukma kesuma no 2 , Br Tebesaya – Ubud, Peliatan, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan cooked, vegan raw, gluten free, organic and locally sourced. Mostly plant-based menu.

We didn’t make it to Sayuri until the end of our time in Ubud and I’m really sad about that. Their organic, raw-living, gluten free & simple cooked plant-based food philosophy really resonated with me and I loved the simplicity and flavours of everything we tried here. They come in at number 3 on my list, mostly because of their extensive healing drinks menu and their cooked nourishing bowls.

I do like raw food but tend to gravitate to something cooked and warm so this place caters for those of us who aren’t there yet with raw vegan. The cafe is really relaxed with lots of online workers claiming a table for them and their laptop for the day.

Such a great atmosphere. Some of our favourites from Sayuri:
> NOURISH-A-BOWL breakfast: Brown rice or quinoa, steamed greens, steamed roots, marinated tempeh, sprouts, ferment, raw greens & veggies + curry goji vinaigrette and Nori & Dulse Gomashio. Seriously the best meal on the menu and I highly recommend!
> MALAYSIAN JACKFRUIT RENDANG dinner: Jackfruit Rendang curry with Malaysian spices & coconut milk, brown rice, eggplant chutney, cucumber slices & coconut yoghurt.
> IMMUNITY SUPERFOOD SMOOTHIE drink: Blueberry, banana, coconut milk, Irish moss, orange, turmeric, goji, cashew, cayenne, cinnamon, coconut nectar. They have a “Smoothie Bike” outside where you can pedal to blitz up your smoothie, if you like the DIY approach!

Pictured: Sayuri turmeric latte, Hand in there Honey shot and Zinger juice with Jesse’s Immunity smoothie bowl and my fave, the Nourish-a-bowl. The BEST start to the day!

Sage, Ubud

.

www.facebook.com/sagerestobali
Jl. Nyuh Bulan No. 1, Banjar Nyuh Kuning, Ubud, MAS, Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan cooked, vegan raw, gluten-free options, organic and locally sourced where possible.

The menu at Sage reminded me a little of Sayuri, which was not a bad thing! And this is likely why I have them at number 4 on the list of best restaurants in Ubud for health travelers. There was a small earthquake when we visited Sage the first time so we had to go back and try again to get a picture for the blog – such a shame (the earthquake, not needing to return for another feast!).

The restaurant is super cute and relaxed, the staff are lovely and very accomodating for recommending gluten free options. Both times we visited Jesse and I went with a Mexican food theme which they ace at Sage. Here are some of our highlights:
> JACKFRUIT ASADA TACOS (GF option) lunch: corn tortillas stuffed with spicy jackfruit baked in coconut milk and spices, with lettuce, pico de gallo, mexican rice and beans and chipotle ‘cream’ sauce.
> TEMPEH BURRITO BOWL dinner: this was from the daily specials menu and should really be on the main menu in my opinion. Marinated tempeh, with lettuce, pico de gallo, mexican rice and beans and chipotle ‘cream’ sauce served in a bowl.
> PURPLE RAIN JUICE drink: seriously the best blend of my favourite juice ingredients. As you can see from the picture below, there was plenty of beetroot, then some carrot, apple, lime and ginger in there.

Pictured: our Sage feast of favourites being the Jackfruit asada tacos, cauliflower fritas, potato and corn gorditas, teriyaki tempeh bowl and purple rain juice.

Bali Buda, Ubud

.

http://www.balibuda.com/
Jalan Jembawan No.1, Ubud, Gianyar, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Paleo, vegan cooked, vegan raw, gluten free options, organic and locally sourced.

Bali Buda offers an extensive menu that will appeal to all tastes, as well as awesome grounding pads of grass you can place under your feet while enjoying your meal. Very cool! We met friends here a few times for their diverse menu and why it’s at number 5 on the on the list of best restaurants in Ubud for healthy travelers.

They offer a raw vegan menu, italian menu, traditional Indonesian menu and more. Here are some highlights:
> RAW FLAX PIZZA CRACKERS snack: served with avo and cashew cheese.
> SIGNATURE BURGERS main: the menu special here is their signature burgers made from either chicken, bean, tofu or beetroot pattie, pesto and salas that you can have served on a charcoal or GF almond bun. It comes with potato and salad as sides.
> DETOX JUICE drink: lemon, aloe vera, ginger, mint and honey. So refreshing!

Pictured: Bali Buda chicken (swapped from tofu) and cashew curry, raw flax pizza crackers, raw superfood balls, grilled pro-bio chicken with salad and extra avocado, detox juice and papaya coconut smoothie.

Alchemy, Ubud

.

www.facebook.com/AlchemyBali
Jl. Penestanan Kelod No.75, Sayan, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan raw, gluten free, organic and locally sourced, 100% plant-based menu.

Alchemy is a raw vegan institution in Ubud and was conveniently located right out the front of where we were staying at Roam, Ubud. We visited often because it was close and convenient, and because their plant-based, raw vegan meals area works of art, if not a little pricey. There is an organic store attached to the restaurant and they are the home of an Ubud Raw chocolate cabinet of delicacies.

Here are some highlights:
ELECTROLYTE drink: coconut water with ginger and lime. You can get bottles of this refreshing combo and take it away, same with their house-made fermented kefirs.
> BREAKFAST BAR: this was a ‘choose your adventure’ type thing where you selected a smoothie base (cashew, berry and spirulina were common options), then 3 fruit and 2 toppings such as granola, nuts or other superfoods.
> RAW MAKI NORI main: nori-wrapped cauliflower rice with raw veg sticks, miso soup and dipping sauce.

Pictured: Aloha raw pizza, nacho plate, electrolyte drink, peppermint kiss smoothie and raw dessert bites.

Ubud Kitchen Gluten Free

.

www.ubudkitchenglutenfree.com
Jl. Sri Wedari No.2, Ubud, Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Paleo, Keto, vegan cooked, 100% gluten free, locally sourced where possible.

Another one of the best restaurants in Ubud for healthy travelers, that also caters to all tastes with an extensive menu, is Ubud Kitchen Gluten Free. They are renowned for their gluten-free chicken schnitzel – which is epic and by far the best chicken we had in Ubud. So good Jesse wanted to head back weekly for a schnitzel fix!

Some of our highlights:
> GLUTEN FREE CHICKEN SCHNITZEL main: their signature dish of crumbed chicken breast, served with salad and mashed potato. Note: this dish is not dairy or egg free.
> PESTO-CHICKEN TENDERLOIN PANINI snack: my favourite meal on their menu, mostly for the gluten free panini of pesto-chicken, with roasted peppers and onion, sweet potato, lettuce and mayo, served with a side salad and purple sweet potato crisps.
> PALEO BANANA MUFFIN: there were different baked goods served daily, all 100% gluten free so we tried a few, really loving the paleo muffin options. There was also a keto muffin option one day.

Pictured: Beet and sweet potato salad, chicken schnitzel, pesto chicken panini, apple delight and green juice.

Atman Kafe, Ubud

.

www.facebook.com/AtmanKafe
Jalan Hanoman No.38, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Paleo, vegan cooked, vegan raw, gluten free options, organic and locally sourced.

Atman cafe was a late find for us (the day we left!), however we had a delicious farewell Ubud healthy meal and added it to our list ahead of some of the other places we visited many times. The food was so fresh and flavoursome, they have a massive menu well signed with gluten free, vegan, etc, and the setting is gorgeous.

Some of the highlights from our single meal are:
> GF VEGAN CHICKEN AND PINEAPPLE PIZZA main: made on a rice flour and buckwheat base, using vegan cashew cheese, tomato marinara, chicken and pineapple. This was divine!
> NASI GORENG WITH CHICKEN SATAY SKEWERS main: I had nasi goreng almost every day while in Ubud and this was one of my standouts in terms of flavour.
> TURMERIC LATTE drink: made on coconut milk this was a spicy and creamy latte blend. Ask for some sweetener if you struggle to drink them without any as it isn’t served with honey or sugar.

Pictured: GF/vegan chicken and pineapple pizza, nasi goreng with chicken satay skewers, corn and potato balls, turmeric and matcha lattes.

Sari Organik, Ubud

.

www.facebook.com/Sari-Organic-RestaurantUbud
Jl. Subak Sok Wayah, Tjampuhan, Ubud, Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan cooked, gluten free options, all organic and locally sourced.

We visited both Sari organic locations (on Penestanan Road and amongst the rice terraces) and have added them to our list because they offer a beautiful setting for traditional Indonesian organic meals, that include organic animal protein sources. Our experience was tainted by slow service and people smoking at the table close to us on one occasion so I’ll mention this quickly.

That said, they still make it onto the list because of the traditional Indonesian food! Here are some of our highlights:
NASI GORENG WITH CHICKEN main: I had this a few times during our stay and it was a highlight nasi gorge for my taste buds.
> SATAY CHICKEN main: served with brown and red rice, and cooked vegetables.
> CARROT, APPLE, GINGER juice: 100% organic and cold pressed.

Pictured: satay chicken skewers, nasi goreng with chicken, guacamole with GF crisps and carrot, apple and ginger juice.

The Seeds of Life Cafe, Ubud

.

theseedsoflifecafe.com
Jalan Gautama No.2, Ubud, Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Vegan raw, vegan cooked, gluten free, organic and locally sourced. Plant-based menu.

There are MANY who rave about this cafe, however we clearly made less-than-amazing food choices after going here for breakfast (see pic below of adventurous and not great choices). We’ve kept them here for this reason, but placed them at number 10 on the list of Best Restaurants in Ubud Bali for Healthy travelers. If we had more time we would have visited again, however learn from our experience and make better menu picks.

Here are our highlights and low-lights:
BERRY SMOOTHIE BOWL breakfast: cacao and berries base with sprouted granola, coconut and cacao nibs.
> BEAUTY juice: Cucumber, apple, mint, lime, aloe and lavender.
> Low-light of both the raw banana and walnut pancakes and the papaya crepes: we just found them to be too rich and sickly sweet. Not our thing, however we were trying to experiment and try something different.

Pictured: Papaya crepes, banana and walnut pancakes, berry smoothie bowl, beauty and banana dharma juice.

Others notable mentions

.

Yellow Flower, Ubud: gorgeous little cafe serving lots of GF and vegan meal options.

Juice Ja Cafe, Ubud: great menu that includes lots of vegan, GF options and good quality animal proteins. Nasi goreng here is also great.

KAFE, Ubud: extensive menu with well signed vegan and GF options.

Soma Cafe, Ubud: vegan cooked and raw, offer GF and vegan woodfired pizza at night.

Earth Cafe & Market, Ubud: vegan cooked and raw cafe with a store attached.
